Fort Asperen
This magnificent tower fort, built between 1845 and 1847, is surrounded by a moat for extra protection. Fort Asperen last saw active use on 12 April 1940, as part of preparations for the coming war. However, the Germans flew straight past it. Fort Asperen, which is an artwork in and of itself, is open to visitors in the summer months. The domed roof to keep out the rain, for instance, is made entirely of glass slates designed in the Glassworks at the National Glass Museum.

Fort Honswijk
Fort Honswijk, situated on the Lek River, is one of the most prominent forts of the New Dutch Waterline. Fort Honswijk's tower (built between 1841 and 1848) is the oldest and largest in the Waterlinie and possesses singular architectural beauty. Fort Honswijk was designed to stop the enemy from crossing the Lekdijk dike and to close off the Lek River in cooperation with Fort Everdingen on the opposite banks of the Lek.

Fort Werk aan de Groeneweg
Walking through the historic trenches of Werk aan de Groeneweg is like a walk back in time. The defence structure still has its original configuration. The infantry set-up in World War One consisted of a double trench with earthen walls, 55 group shelters and lovely fruit trees.
The grounds are a fantastic playground for children. You can have a great time here roaming around, crawling through a trench, playing hide and seek and participating in an exciting search and experience walk of about 2 km, with soldier Vendrik as your guide.

Asschatterkeerkade
The Asschatterkade dates from 1745, and is one of the longest trenches of the Grebbelinie, with its length of 2500 metres. The trench from 1799 lies east of Leusden, at the edge of the flood plain. But there are also elements from more recent history which can be found.
The nine visible military bunkers, for example, were built during the mobilisation between 1939-1940. There is also a unique concrete tank barrier from this time. During the May Days of 1940, the Germans attempted in vain to break through the defences.

Somewhat hidden in the woods along Gedekte Gemeenschapsweg between Fort Honswijk and Werk aan de Korte Uitweg is the small but atmospheric Lunet aan de Snel. The earthen rampart allowed defenders to repel an attack on Fort Honswijk from the north-east. In addition, its guns covered parts of the Lekdijk – something that could not be achieved from Fort Honswijk.
These days, the fort houses an exhibition that illustrates the key role that water plays in our community and its unique properties.

The Zouweboezem nature reserve
An undiscovered gem, full of beautiful flora and fauna. This storage area was dug in the 14th century to collect the excess water between the polders. Now it is an oasis of peace in which grasslands, reed beds and water alternate. Have your camera ready, because the swamp fields are the home and breeding ground for many bird species. The purple heron, the marsh harrier and the china grouse, you can admire them all.

Werk aan de Waalse Wetering
This defence work was built in 1875–1878 and comprises a bomb-proof outbuilding and a guardhouse.
In emergencies, it could harbour as many as 95 men.
The fort is freely accessible and boasts uninterrupted views of the island of Schalkwijk. The Verdronken Bos (drowned forest), where a wooden walkway takes you across the water, is a short walk away.

Fort at 't Hemeltje
Fort 't Hemeltje dates from 1877-1881 and is the last built fort of the New Dutch Waterline. It defended a strip of land that could not be flooded and the 's-Hertogenbosch-Utrecht railway line. Nowadays, Fort bij 't Hemeltje is largely used as office space for various entrepreneurs who are active in the field of sustainability. The fort also offers shelter to (breeding) birds and bats.
There is a walking route around the fort and there is an exciting spy route with fun assignments for children. In addition, the fort is regularly open to the public, for example during Open Heritage Days.
